Apple Planning Next Year To Release 'Cutting Edge' Iphone 7 With Wireless Charging

Apple could be following the likes of Samsung and Sony by putting wireless charging in its next generation of mobile devices .

That's according to sources speaking to Bloomberg who confirm the iPhone manufacturer is working on "cutting edge" wireless technology.

The sources say that the wireless charging in future iPhones and iPads will allow the gadgets to be placed further away from charging mats than current smartphones.

Apple is working on overcoming "technical barriers including loss of power over distance."

The unnamed sources say that while the technology won't be available this year, we'll see it in iPhones coming out in 2017.

Back in 2010, Apple applied for a patent for a concept of using an iMac as a wireless charging hub for smaller devices. And companies such as McDonald's are experimenting with providing wireless charging stations for customers.

Several tech companies already build wireless charging into their phones. Last year's Samsung Galaxy S6 included the feature that meant it could be juiced up by placing it on a compatible charging mat.

If Apple does add wireless charging, it's unlikely to remove the traditional power cord as this will still be required for connecting to a Macbook or PC.

However, it's been widely rumoured that the next version of the iPhone will scrap the headphone jack and rely on Bluetooth connections for wireless headphones.
