Cameroon, Nigerian Joint Troops Kill 17 Boko Haram Terrorist

Cameroonian and Nigerian defence forces have killed at least 17 insurgents of the Boko Haram militia group, according to Cameroon’s Communication Minister Issa Tchiroma Bakary.

In a statement read on national radio on January 26, the minister said the operation in the Cameroon town of Achigachia which borders Boko Haram’s strongholds in northeastern Nigeria took place between 24 and 25 of January.

The announcement came less than 24 hours after four suspected Boko Haram suicide bombers killed at least 32 people in multiple blasts in a market and a town in the Far North region of Cameroon.

It said special troops from the Multinational Joint Task-Force (MNJTF) participated in the raid on the “locality considered as one of the support bases of the Boko Haram terrorist group.”

Mr Tchiroma Bakary said the border locality had also become a logistics and transit base and infiltration corridor of suicide bombers, and a “springboard for several attacks and the laying of mines on the Cameroonian territory.”

The troops seized assorted weapons, ammunition and propaganda material as well as cattle from the terrorists, the minister said.

Three Cameroonian soldiers incurred “minor” injuries during the counter-attack, the minister’s statement added.
