Jenner’s E! docu-series premiered last Sunday. The show follows the highs and lows of the star’s life since transitioning from male to female earlier this year. And, as seen in the new sneak peek, Jenner hasn’t mastered a softer voice to match her womanly appearance.
Jenner, sitting with Kardashian and family friend Malika Haqq, reveals that when she used to travel and stay alone at hotels, she would call down to room service with her best “feminine voice” in hopes that she would convincingly come off as a female guest. But she “could never” pull it off, leading Kardashian to encourage Jenner to try the voice out now. Pretending to be a hotel concierge, the reality star asks Jenner to place a food order.
Jenner hesitates, and when she finally speaks, she doesn’t sound all that different than normal. Kardashian bursts out laughing and calls Jenner “sir” instead of “ma’am.” “See,” responds Jenner, “that’s the problem.”
But as light-hearted as the moment seems, the clip then cuts to a confessional with Jenner, in which she tells the camera how seriously she takes the voice issue. “Women cannot relate to the whole voice thing. They don’t see it as being that important, when it IS that important,” she explains. “Not only for you just to speak and order and do all that kind of stuff, but very important for your soul that you’re feeling good about that.”
Jenner wrote on her WhoSay blog after the ESPYS that while she was happy with the way her speech went, it bothered her that she still sounded manly.
