OSUN State government, yesterday, commenced payment of outstanding salary arrears to workers in the state.
A statement issued by the Director of Bureau of Communication and Strategy, office of the governor, Mr. Semiu Okanlawon, said Chairman of the Osun chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Jacob Adekomi, commended Governor Rauf Aregbesola for deploying the bailout loan to the payment of the backlog of workers’ salaries.
Adekomi stated that there had not been any disagreement between labour and the government on deployment of the bailout loan as speculated in some quarters.
Speaking on the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between government and the committee inaugurated on the disbursement of the bailout loan, the NLC boss said the funds to be disbursed by government would cover the payment of outstanding salaries from January to June.
“In order to ensure sustainability of payment of salaries in the state of Osun, the first disbursement from the bailout loan should cover the payment of outstanding September and December 2014 deductions, balance of January and February salaries and full payment of March, April and May 2015 salaries for state government workers,” he said.
He said they also agreed that “local government workers and primary school teachers be paid their first installment out of the bailout loan to cover the payment of balance of March and April, 2015 salaries as well as full payment of May and June, 2015 salaries.
