BEREAVED ENYEAMA ‘SORRY’ FOR MISSING TANZANIA CLASH

Super Eagles captain Vincent Enyeama has written an emotion-laden statement on Instagram to describe his sorrow at both losing his mother and missing the key Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Tanzania on Saturday.

Enyeama withdrew from the match on Wednesday for ‘personal reasons’ that were initially not disclosed. But it emerged later in the day that the Lille goalkeeper had lost his mother, when former Super Eagles media officer Colin Udoh tweeted the sad news.

Although he did not mention his late mother, Enyeama’s post on Instagram late on Wednesday night was raw with emotion, the words dripping with pain.

“So sorry I won’t make it out there to wear this shirt,” Enyeama wrote below an artist’s impression of himself in a Super Eagles shirt.
“So sorry that I won’t be standing there singing the anthem of my sweet NIGERIA. #WEARENIGERIA. I wish that this darkness didn’t come in daylight. I wish that I could turn back the hands of time. I wish, I just wish that I could take away this pain. Let the rain wash away this pain.”

Regarded as a hero by Nigerians following brilliant performances for the country, Enyeama’s compatriots displayed their sympathy with him with messages of support and prayers in comments under the post.

In Enyeama’s absence, Ahmed Musa is expected to captain the Super Eagles in Tanzania, while Carl Ikeme is expected to make his debut in goal.
