No fewer than three persons suspected to be members of rival cult groups were yesterday killed in Elega and Ago-Odo areas of Abeokuta North Local Government, in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital when the groups clashed.
LEADERSHIP learnt that the fracas, which started at a pub inside the MKO Abiola International Stadium, Kuto, Abeokuta, last Friday, climaxed with the killing of the two victims.
It was gathered that the first victim, who was said to be the leader of Eiye Confraternity and identified as Ibrahim Babatunde Alamutu, was shot by members of Aiye Confraternity but the bullets did not penetrate his body, and knives were then employed to dispatch him.
Sources who preferred anonymity confirmed to journalists who visited the scene that Alamutu, popularly referred to as ‘Emir,’ was attacked immediately after his marriage introduction held at Elega Junction in the area. The sources also said that his throat was slashed while his oesophagus and his left palm were removed from his body.
In what appeared like a reprisal, members of Eiye Confraternity reportedly stormed Ago-Odo around 7:30 am where another two victims were also killed.
Security operatives including men of the Department of State Services (DSS), men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and scores of police officers were later led to the scene by the Abeokuta Area Commander, Presley Dodeh, and the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Adatan, Ogunjobi Tolani.
Three building in Sodolamu’s compound were razed while no fewer than 10 vehicles were vandalised.
A resident who identified himself as Lateef Koleoso whose Nissan Commercial vehicle was also damaged told our correspondent that the cult members had earlier stormed the area in the late hours of Sunday, damaging property.
Police PRO, Muyiwa Adejobi, told journalists shortly after the police had restored normalcy to the area, that only Babatunde Alamutu, 32, was killed in the attack and that his remains had since been evacuated to a morgue in Abeokuta, the state capital.
