A family of five, consisting of father, mother, grandmother, a girl and an infant, were wiped out on Wednesday in a fire incident at their Lagos residence.
All five were killed in the fire, which trapped them at residence at No. 23 Michael Ogun Street, Obele, Lawanson area of Lagos.
Rescue agencies however said the deceased persons may have first died of suffocation before the raging fire got to them.
This was because the father of the family was found trapped under a window by the roof which had fallen on his back and when taken to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), was confirmed dead.
An eyewitness, Ojo Saheed said the fire which started around 12.30 am, was not noticed until smoke started coming from the ceiling.
Ojo said residents had battled to put out the fire, without knowing that the family of five were trapped inside the apartment.
The bodies have since been evacuated by the police and deposited at the nearby morgue.
He said, “The fire affected a building. The affected family stays in one of the apartments. We are suspecting that the fire might have been caused by a candle.”
Confirming the incident, the South-west Public Relations Officer of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Ibrahim Farinloye, however said a 6 year-old boy was rescued alive.
He said: “It was a tragic situation. The father, mother, grand mother, a baby and a girl were consumed by fire this morning at No. 23 Michael Ogun Street, Obele, Lawanson.
“A boy of about 6-years was rescued alive. The fire outbreak started around 12.10 a.m. this morning.
“Also, a yet-to-be identified adult who slept under a truck at Sari-Igunmu area of Orile, was unknowingly crushed by the truck. The body of the man has been deposited at a public morgue.”
