The 31-year-old striker, who has previously played for the likes of Arsenal, Manchester City and Real Madrid, was not part of Spurs head coach Mauricio Pochettino's plans.
Adebayor caused a surprise on transfer deadline day by rejecting the opportunity to terminate his contract even after being told he had no future at the club.
Tottenham's statement read: "We can confirm that we have reached a mutual agreement with Emmanuel Adebayor which will see him released from his contract with the club. We wish Emmanuel well for the future."
West Ham and Aston Villa had been amongst the clubs credited in an interest with Adebayor and Villa Park boss Tim Sherwood, who managed the Togo frontman in his own spell at Spurs, said this weekend he was still interested.
"I would not hesitate. If he had the desire to want to come and play football again, I would have taken him in a heartbeat," Sherwood said despite Adebayor's deadline-day decision.
"We still have to respect his decision, whatever he makes. It's his - I can't influence it."
Adebayor has not played at all this season and only made nine Premier League starts in the whole of 2014-15.
He scored 35 goals in 92 Premier League appearances for Tottenham.
