    I Won’t Interfere With INEC ~ Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has administered the oath of office on the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu, alongside his commissioners yesterday.

The President, however, vowed never to interfere with INEC’s activities but warned that they would be held accountable for their actions if they allow themselves to be unduly influenced, adding: “The nation has reposed a lot of trust and confidence in you. You cannot afford to fail.”

Buhari gave the charge at a short swearing- in ceremony at the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa.

The Council of States had, at its meeting last month, confirmed Yakubu’s appointment and five national commissioners for the electoral body. The commissioners include: Amina Zakari, (North West), Anthonia Okoosi-Simbine, (North central), Baba Shettima Arfo, (North East), Soyebi Adedeji Solomon, (South West) and Mohammed Mustafa Lecky (South-South).

While pledging to respect the independence of the commission and not interfere with its operations, the President said the All Progressives Congress (APC) government promised Nigerians change and it would be all-embracing.
