344 Sacked Workers Drag Wike To Court

The 344 workers of the Ken Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic, Bori, Rivers State, southern Nigeria, who were sacked by Governor Nyesom Wike on assumption of office, have dragged the Rivers state government to court for illegal termination of appointment.

The matter was filed at the National Industrial Court sitting in Yenagoa by lawyers from the Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law led by Anyankwe Nsirimovu.

The Rivers state government was served the court papers on Friday last week. Other parties that were joined in the matter are the state ministry of Education and the management of Ken Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic formerly known as Rivers State Polytechnic, Bori.

The sacked aggrieved workers decided to take legal action against the Rivers state government because several attempts to have Governor Wike to reverse their sack had fallen on deaf ears.

Governor Wike in July ordered the sack of the newly recruited workers who had passed through all due processes of interview and recruitment and they had been issued appointment letters.

They were about to resume duty after receiving employment letters and staff identification cards by the management of the Polytechnic, and had gone ahead to open salary accounts when Governor Wike ordered the termination of their appointment.

The affected workers were employed by the administration of Governor Chibuike Amaechi, raising allegations that the termination of their appointments was a political vendetta against those alleged to be loyalists of Amaechi.
