In the just concluded FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile, World football governing body, FIFA has admitted to making a mistake in the award of the Bronze Boot to wrong Nigerian player.
In a letter written to the NFF as posted on their website, FIFA disclosed that it has now realized that the initial recipient, Kelechi Nwakali was not the deserving winner but his team mate, Samuel Chukwueze.
Both Nwakali and Chukwueze scored 3 goals and made three assists but FIFA has now uncovered that the latter had less play time.
‘Instead of player no. 8 of Nigeria, Samuel Chukwueze, the player Kelechi Nwakali (player no. 10 of Nigeria) received the adidas Bronze Boot. However, if two or more players are still equal (after goals and assists), the player who has played fewer number of minutes will be ranked first,’ FIFA wrote.
The global football body however revealed that Nwakali can hold on to his trophy while it has promised to send another to the new recipient.
‘Adidas will send you another Bronze Boot in December 2015, which we would kindly ask you to hand over to Samuel Chukwueze. Please be informed that Kelechi Nwakali may keep his trophy,’ the statement read further.
