The Independent Corrupt Practices and related offences Commission (ICPC) is set to try former Zamfara state governor, Ahmed Sani Yerima, for alleged mismanagement of N1billion loan meant for the repair of the Gusau Dam in 2006.
The ICPC has filed 19 charges against Yerima at the High Court of Zamfara State. Yerima was governor of Zamfara State between 1999 and 2007.
The former governor is to face trial alongside three co-accused persons — Alhaji Hashim A. Dikko, Development Management Limited and HAD Nigeria Limited.
Of the N1billion allocated for the repair of the Gusau Dam, about N425, 491,736.75 was allegedly diverted to other purposes, including purported assistance to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), furniture allowance, consultancy fee, Ramadan feeding, Hajj and purchase of cars.
Investigation revealed that only N574,508,263.25 was purportedly utilized for flood disaster related matters.
There were also payments to various individuals and companies out of the loan, none of which were for its intended purpose.
Yerima was the first governor to introduce Sharia law in northern Nigeria, the implementation of which led to the amputation of many individuals convicted for stealing among other offences.
In 2010, Yerima as a serving Senator came under heavy criticism for marrying a 13-year-old Egyptian, an action believed to contravene the Child Rights Act of 2003, a legislation made by the National Assembly. Public outrage at the action inspired the #ChildNotBride campaign.
