A Breeder Baffled After Snake With Two Heads Hatches From Egg [Photos]

A snake breeder got the shock of his life when one of his reptile's eggs hatched - to reveal a two-headed snake .

John McNamara, from Wodonga, Victoria, in Australia, initially thought the egg contained twins when it began to hatch on February 6.

But as the shell cracked open, John was surprised to discover a Siamese snake nestled in the egg.

John told The Border Mail in Australia: "There would have been two yolks and they just haven't split properly... and I ended up with this."

"I've got a lot of mates that breed reptiles, and have rung around and it's pretty rare in the trade," he continued. "To be alive still is even rarer."

John's daughter Kaylah, 10, has named the snake Twin Destroyers. The snake's gender remains unknown.

John is hoping a vet might be willing to take a look at the reptile, to determine whether one head is more dominant than the other.

Ben Phillips, a lecturer at the University of Melbourne School of Bio-Sciences, told The Border Mail that the snake could survive with two heads for many years in captivity, depending on its biological make up.

He said: "They no doubt require extra care. Snakes aren't all that clever, if you throw a mouse to a two-headed snake, it is likely one will grab the front and one will grab the back and they attempt to eat each other.

"There is something fascinating about any animal that has two heads because there is a sense of them being separate entities and the same."
