El-zakzaky and his wife, Zeenat, have been in detention since December 2015, after a violent clash between members of his sect and the Nigerian Army that left hundreds of his followers dead.
In a petition to the director-general of the DSS, Mr Falana demanded the release of the Zakzakys, who he also referred to as his clients, from illegal detention within 24 hours.
“Even though our clients have not been told that they breached any law, they have been denied access to their lawyers, personal physicians, and family members for over three months.
“Our clients were only permitted to meet with us last Friday after several requests made by us had been turned down without any legal basis,” Falana said.
On December 12, 2015, armed soldiers clashed with members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, popularly known as Shiites, leaving several people dead in Zaria, Kaduna State.
On Tuesday, online newspaper, Sahara Reporters claimed security sources hinted the medium that the federal government was worried about releasing Zakzaky and his wife with the degree of injuries they sustained during the clash with the military. The security sources reportedly said Zakzaky had completely gone blind in one year while his wife also sustained different injuries to her stomach and other parts of her body.
