The Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) in Kano State has been accused of refusing to act even when fuel marketers sell at over 200 per litre.
The EFCC Public Relations Officer (PRO), North-West Zone, Mrs. Nana-Fatima Abubakar, disclosed the arrest while conducting journalists round the filling station where the commodity was diverted to at Laraba Abasawa in Gezawa Local Government Area.
She said the commission had since got a court order to dispose of the product to members of the public at government- approved price. Abubakar said the discovery was made by operatives of the commission who were on routine surveillance of petrol stations in parts of the state.
The PRO said preliminary investigation into the case revealed that the product was loaded in Lagos on February 25 and got to Kano on March 4.
She said: “The product was expected to be discharged at Beha Tech Filling Station in Giade Local Government Area of Bauchi State but was diverted to Kano State. According to her, the product was reportedly purchased at N140 per litre, totalling N7.7 million.
She said already a difference of N2.9 million had been exploited by the marketers excluding petroleum equalization and bridging funds the government was paying the owners of the product (Total).
Abubakar said investigation was still in progress and the suspects would soon be charged to court for prosecution. At the time of filing this report, the product was still being sold to motorists at controlled price under the watchful eyes of armed security personnel.
