NLC, TUC Demand N56,000 Minimum Wage

An industrial action might be looming in Nigeria as the organised Labour is currently pushing for a new National Minimum Wage of N56, 000. The proposal, which was made open yesterday by the President of the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, Comrade Ayuba Wabba, if successful, would move the minimum wage from N18, 000 to the new figure.

President Muhammadu Buhari, had, at a National Executive Council Meeting of his party, the All Progressives Congress recently, stated that some 27 states were finding it hard to pay salaries of their workers. Just this month, the Federation Accounts Allocation Committee FAAC, announced that it would waive deduction from allocations to states for the month of April.

The Secretary to the Government of the Fed-eration, Babachir David Lawal had said also in Jos last month that the Federal Government was borrowing about N600 million every month to pay salaries. On Tuesday also, the Niger State Governor, Abubakar Sani Bello, said that he was borrowing N400million monthly to pay salaries in the state.

But at a news conference yesterday in Abuja, Wabba stated that the NLC and the Trade Union Congress, TUC, have proposed and submitted to the Federal Government the new figure. Wabba said that both the NLC and the TUC made the formal demand on the proposed national minimum wage to the Federal Government on Tuesday.

“I can say now authoritatively that as of yesterday (Tuesday) we made a formal proposal to the Federal Government of N56,000 to be the new minimum wage. “The demand has been submitted officially to government and we hope that the tripartite system to look at the review will actually be put set up to look at it.

“Our argument is that, yes, it is true that the economy is not doing well, but the law states that wages for workers must be reviewed after every five years. “So, the issue must be looked into by the Federal Government and workers should not be seen as sleeping on their rights, ”he said.
