In recent months, the airline has seen its fortune dwindle with its fleet depleted from 12 to just four functional aircraft.
Aero is also indebted to several banks to the tune of about N200million a trend that had forced the Asset Management Corporation of Nigerian (AMCON) to take over the management of the airline.
A Source within the airline told aviation correspondents that most of the affected workers were on contract to the airline. Letters terminating the employment of the workers were also dispatched to them on Thursday.
“Most of the sacked workers were not permanent staff of Aero but support staff from Skyborne Limited, a company whose contract with Aero was recently terminated,” said the source, a staff of the airline “Aero is immersed in a financial crisis and they are doing just everything to cut cost, stay profitable and remain in business. “You know in Aero, some departments and duties are outsourced. So what the management did was not to renew their contracts which recently expired.
“I can tell you that our staffers are intact and we don’t have the plans to retrench our own staff. But given the present financial state of the airline, we don’t have any need for those outsourced staff and we felt they should be withdrawn from our services,” added the source who preferred to remain anonymous. A spokesman for Aero, Mr Simon Tumba in a statement said: “For the record Aero has not sacked it’s staff but only cut down some of the services requires from Skyborne in the course of reorganising and repositioning it’s business. “This will help the company to invest more resources to enhance customer services,” he added.
