26-Year-Old Ulcer Patient Raped and Impregnated by Lagos ‘Doctor’

A trado-medical doctor simply identified as Abiodun has been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command for raping and impregnating a 26 year old patient he had been treating for ulcer in the Ipaja Ayobo area of Lagos. The doctor whose health care centre – Damola Healthcare, is located on Agbaje Street was picked upon by men of the Isokoko Police Division.

According the Punch, the patient, Funmilayo (not real name) had gone to the healthcare centre to seek treatment for her ulcer in December 2015, where worker’s of Damola Healthcare billed her N18,000 after prescribing herbal drugs for her. She is said to have made a down payment of N10,000 and not noticing any improvement in her condition after a while, she requested to see Abiodun himself in January 2016 leading him to takeover her case.

Funmilayo who hails from Abeokuta and lives 2 streets away from the healthcare was told she had womb infections on January 17 after Abiodun carried out some tests and was advised to come back on January 19 at 9am for further examination.

On the set day, the very anxious Funmilayo arrived at the hospital 2 hours before her appointment and was called into the doctor’s office around 8am where she was allegedly asked to undress to have her private parts examined.

Instead of an examination, Abiodun raped his patient and thereafter begged her not to tell anyone what had transpired.

“On that day, when he arrived, we went into his office. He asked me to lie on the bed as he would insert a rubber tool into my private parts for examination. I did. My legs were far apart. He did that for some minutes, and suddenly I noticed he inserted his private parts.

“I shouted, but the cleaner did not come in. He stopped when he ejaculated. Immediately, he began to apologise that he did not know what came over him. I vowed not to return to the centre. I did not tell anybody because I thought I should just forget about it.”

She however, made a formal complaint at the Ayobo Police Division in February which led to the arrest of Abiodun after she discovered she was pregnant and the good doctor allegedly asked her to have an abortion. She insisted on keeping the baby stating that she was not promiscuous hence she wouldn’t risk her life in that manner and the doctor made the promise to take care after after which he was granted bail. A promise he has failed to keep.

Describing the events leading up to the arrest, Funmilayo, a National Diploma holder from a polytechnic in Lagos State, said she found the experience shocking, stating that she could no longer keep it a secret.

The matter was later escalated to the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team, Alausa, with Funmilayo referred to the Mirabel Centre, Ikeja, for a checkup after which it was transferred to Isokoko Dovision leading to a re-arrest of Abiodun.

SP Dolapo Badmos, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed Abiodun’s arrest stating that, “The ‘doctor’ has been arrested. The case is still under investigation.”

Lola Vivour-Adeniyi, the DSVRT Coordinator, Lola Vivour-Adeniyi, warned female patients to insist on having a female nurse around in the hospital room, whenever their private parts were to be examined by a male doctor.

“This is a rape by a traditional doctor which has now resulted in pregnancy. We requested that the case be transferred to the Family Support Unit of the Isokoko division from Ayobo division. The Department of Public Prosecutions has also requested the duplicate case file.”

The DSVRT has referred the victim to the OPD to get legal representation. She is also being given antenatal care at the Mirabel Centre.
