Delta Court Sentences 2 Fulani Herdsmen to 20 Years in Prison

In a move that could deter further attacks on villages by suspected Fulani herdsmen, a Delta State High Court, sitting in Asaba, on Monday sentenced two Fulani herdsmen to 20 years in prison with hard labour.

The herdsmen, Hassan Abidu and Yakubu Salem, are members of a group of armed nomads who have terrorised indigenes of Ibusa and its environs, the Vanguard is reporting.

The herdsmen were convicted on a two-count charge of unlawful possession of firearms and sentenced to 10 years imprisonment each with hard labour, without an option of fine for the two-count charge. The offence is punishable under Section 3(1) of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provision) Act Cap R.II, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2010.

The prosecution said the men were arrested on February 23, 2015 at 6 a.m., after the Ibusa Police Division received a distress call that a group of suspected herdsmen numbering about six were sited around Power Line, Ibusa, armed with dangerous weapons including firearms.
