John Kasich To Drop Out Of Presidential Race, Leaving Donald Trump As Lone Candidate

John Kasich plans to suspend his presidential campaign, leaving Donald Trump with no major remaining rivals in his path to the Republican nomination, several news outlets reported on Wednesday.

NBC News, CNN and Politico reported that the Ohio governor would abandon his bid. He won only one contest, his home state of Ohio.

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus called Trump the party’s “presumptive nominee” in a tweet sent after rival Ted Cruz dropped out of the race on Tuesday. Trump trounced Cruz in the Indiana primary, and is now less than 200 delegates from securing the Republican nomination.

Kasich had drawn support from some of the industry’s longtime Republicans, like Harry Sloan, who co-hosted a fundraiser for him in January along with Ron Burkle and Gary Winnick. There had been some anticipation that Kasich would wage a campaign in California for the June 7 primary, with developer Rick Caruso named California state co-chair.

But Kasich’s campaign never took off after his Ohio victory, and it became increasingly clear that Trump would be able to secure the nomination by the end of the primary season.
