Lagos state commissioner for transportation, Dr Dayo Mobereola made this known while addressing newsmen at the 2016 ministerial press briefing in commemoration of the first year in office of the state governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, in Alausa, Ikeja. Mr. Mobereola said that plans have been concluded to replace the danfos with 30-seater air-conditioned vehicles.
The transport commissioner equally disclosed that the state government has procured four single electric multiple unit (EMU) car train coaches for use on the Lagos urban rail network (LURN) especially on the blue and red lines currently under construction in the state.
According to Vanguard, the Lagos state government had under Babatunde Fashola administration in 2014 approved a contract of $14.6 million to the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) and China North Locomotive and Rolling Stock Industry Corporation (CNR) joint venture for the supply of the four EMU trains by the Chinese government.
Mr Mobereola also said the state government was discussing with stakeholders on the construction of a red rail line from the Agbado area of Lagos to Marina in Lagos island.
“The Right of Way has been approved by the Federal Government as it will run parallel on the existing corridor of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC). Also, the phase 1 is from Mile 2 to the National Theatre where infrastructure works are 95 percent completed. The phase 2 is from the National Theatre to Marina where we have achieved 40 percent completion.”
According to the commissioner, Efforts to re-brand transportation in the state will also be extended to new number plates, colour uniformity and body tags for all public transport workers.
