The 2016 Batch A, Stream Two corps members deployed to Kano State on Wednesday embarked on a protest over the non-payment of their monthly allowance.
While the protest lasted, it disrupted the passing out parade of the corps members after their three-week orientation course, as they insisted on collecting their allowances before the commencement of the programme.
Concerted efforts by the Brigade Commander and the security agents to pacify the corps members failed. The NYSC members lamented that it was only Kano NYSC that refused to pay their allowances.
According to the corps members, they do not know their fate at the end of the programme, as most of them are due to relocate on Wednesday (today) without any money for their transportation.
However, following the prevailing security situation in the North-East, the Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima, on Wednesday assured about 300 Batch ‘A’ Stream Two, NYSC members deployed to the state of their safety.
Shettima gave the assurance during the closing ceremony of the orientation exercise, held at the Dan Yamusa Orientation Camp, Keffi Local Government Area in Nasarawa State.
The governor, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of Borno Liason Office, Abuja, Mr. Abdulkadir Ayuba, said it was as a result of the security situation that the orientation camp was shifted from Borno to Nasarawa State.
He, however, explained that he was proud and thrilled that 300 corps members chose to return to complete their primary assignment. He described the gesture as an act of courage and patriotism, despite the security situation in the state.
He said, “For the bold and courageous who have resolved to come with us to Nasarawa, I salute your doggedness and assure you that government has put in place security measures to guaranty the security of your lives and properties.”
Meanwhile, the Governor of Niger State, Abubakar Bello, has approved the upward review of corp members’ allowances posted to the state from N3,000 to N5,000, with effect from July 2016.
Bello, who gave the approval on Wednesday during the closing ceremony of the 2016 Batch A (Stream Two) Orientation Course at the NYSC orientation camp, at Paiko in Niger State, said that despite the dwindling resources of the country, the state government remained committed to the welfare of the corps members.
He therefore directed all the local government councils in the state to join in the welfare programme for the corps members, warning that no ministry should reject corps members posted to them for their primary assignment.
He said, “The corps members must be given the necessary support to enable them feel comfortable and contribute their quota to the development of the state. No matter how small the resources are, we will make their stay comfortable.”
