Rangers International of Enugu have broken a 32-year jinx to emerge champions of the Nigeria Professional Football League title for the 2015/16 season.
The Flying Antelopes survived a scare to beat Ikorodu United 2-1 at the MKO Abiola Stadium on Sunday to complete a fairytale run that’s seen them play some sumptuous football this season.
The Flying Antelopes wasted no time in making their intentions known as Obinna Nwobodo stunned the hosts with a blistering strike in the first half, quickly followed by an insurance goal from Chisom Egbuchulam to all but end the tie as a contest and secure the title with a game left to spare.
Their closest rivals, Rivers United failed to get the job done after faltering at home to Abia Warriors in a barren draw while third-placed Wikki Tourists suffered a 1-0 loss in Ibadan against Shooting Stars.
The turn of events leaves the Coal city outfit with a near unassailable 60 points and a +12 goals difference, meaning that coach Imama Amakapabo and his boys can now celebrate a well-won league title after many years of heart break and near misses.
They now join last season’s champions Enyimba FC as the most successful sides in the League with seven titles.
