Death Toll Of Cassava Flour "Amala" Consumption in Kogi Rises to 9

Three more people have reportedly passed on since they consumed the cassava flour which previously claimed six lives in Kogi State.
Recall that the tragedy started last week when an Okene mum, three children and two of their neighbours (also children) died after eating a meal made from the cassava flour the mum brought from her farm.
According to Vanguard, two more victims, a 42-year-old woman and 10-year-old boy, were declared dead yesterday at the Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja. The boy died at about 4am yesterday morning, while the woman passed on at about 10am same day.
Speaking with newsmen, the Acting Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Olatunde Alabi, clarified that the number of first victims were 7 and not the 6 as previously reported, and so the total number of deaths as at press time was 9.
Alabi added that a girl of 13 is in critical condition, and the cause of the deaths is still not known.
Clinically, we are saying we are suspecting cyanide poison,’’ Alabi said, adding that the state government has decided to send the blood samples of the victims for detoxincology test in South Africa.
