    Meet Defender That Survived Colombia Plane Crash That Killed His Team-Mates

    ALAN RUSCHEL has been named as one of only four survivors of the Colombia plane crash on a flight carrying the players from Brazilian football side Chapecoense.

    Ruschel was recovered from the wreckage of the charter airline Lamia plane which crashed en route to play a cup final in Medellin.

    He was the first of the handful of the 81 people on board the jet to be found alive and was rushed to hospital for emergency treatment.

    Who is Alan Ruschel?


    Ruschel is a 27-year-old defender playing for Chapecoense in the Brazilian professional league, who was one of four survivors of the plane crash on a flight carrying his team.

    The full-back was spending the season on loan at the club from top Brazilian side Internacional, who he joined in 2014.

    Ruschel was born in Taquara and was in his second spell playing for Chapecoense having played for the club previously in 2013.

    He is married to wife, Alissen.

    Who are Chapecoense?

    Chapecoense are small Brazilian club who have only recently broken into the top tier of football in the country.

    They were formed in 1973 in the city of Chapeco, situated in the state of Santa Caterina in southern Brazil.

    Four years after they were formed they won the state title in 1977, one of four times they were crowned champions with the last success coming in 2011.

    In 2015 they were promoted to Serie A for the first time, the top division in Brazil, and quickly adapted to life at a higher level.

    The club had reached the final of the Copa Scudamericana, South America's version of the Europa League, beating the feared Argentinian club San Lorenzo de Almagro in the semi-final.

    What happened in the crash?


    The chartered aircraft from Bolivian airline Lamia was flying from Brazil via Bolivia, but crashed on its approach to the city of Medellin in Colombia.

    The Chapecoense team had been travelling to Colombia to play in the final of the Copa Sudemericano against Medellin side Atletico Nacional.

    The plane, carrying 81 passengers and crew, crashed in a mountainous area on the approach to Medellin.

    The pilot had reported an electrical fault before it crashed just before midnight local time.

    Four people survived the crash, including two of the players.
