Jose Mourinho has conceded Manchester United are at risk of missing out on the top four due to the tough competition in the Premier League.
The Red Devils chief refused to limit their ambition to finishing fourth though, insisting they can be better than that.
But with Arsenal in fourth and four points ahead of United, Mourinho is fearful of going without Champions League for another season.
"We have the risk of not finishing fourth because the competition is so hard and the top teams have the same ambitions as we have," Mourinho told Sky Sports. "So I don't want to say fourth or third or fifth."
"Let's see where we finish, I don't want to say fourth, because I think we can do better than fourth."
Despite the difficulties in the preliminary stages of his tenure, Mourinho believes his group are working hard to achieve success in the style desired by the United fans.
"Obviously we need to work and work, improve and improve, but footballing ideas, principles of play, the way we want to defend and attack, is clear," Mourinho admitted.
