Labourer Gets N50,000 Bail For Allegedly Stealing Toilet Seat

An Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, on Tuesday granted N50,000 bail to a labourer, Peter Onyeke, for allegedly stealing toilet seat/flusher in the house of Dr Muiz Banire, former Commissioner for Environment, Lagos State.

Onyeke, 25, who is of no fixed address, is standing trial on one-count charge of stealing.

The prosecutor, Sgt. Cyriacus Osuji, told the court that the accused committed the offence on Dec. 8, at 2:00p.m., at No. 1 Dr Muiz Banire St., Lekki phase 1, Eti-Osa in Lagos.

He said that the accused stole a toilet seat and a flusher worth N15,000, belonging to Dr Muiz Banire (SAN).

Osuji said the accused entered into the premises and stole the items but was caught by a security man.

“The accused could not give proper account of how he got the items,’’ Osuji said.

He said the offence contravened Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

Section 285 provides three years imprisonment for anyone found guilty of stealing.

The accused, however, denied the charge.

Counsel to Onyeke, Mrs Helen Ibeji, urged the court to grant him bail.

The Magistrate, Mrs O. O. Otitoloji, granted him N50,000 bail with one surety who must be a blood relation of the accused with a valid means of identification.

Otitoloji adjourned the case till Dec. 19 for mention. (NAN)
