The United Nations Organisation for Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO) has begun the process of listing Idanre Hills in Idanre Local Government Area of Ondo State as World Heritage Site and Mare, the annual mountain climbing competition as World Tourism Centre.
The Commissioner for Culture, Tourism and Special Duties, Chief Femi Adekanmbi, who disclosed this at a press conference in Akure Monday to kick start the eighth edition of the Mare festival said the processes of the listings are 90 percent completed.
Adekanmbi, who enumerated the benefits of UNESCO’s intervention in the annual rituals including job creation and foreign exchange earning, advocated for Public Private Partnership (PPP) so that the UNESCO enlistment which is at 90 percent stage can be speedily achieved
He, however, urged the incoming government of Mr Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN) to sustain the annual Mare Festival by his predecessor in order to improve on culture and tourism potentials in the state.
