Samsung, LG To Unveil Foldable Smartphones This Year

Samsung Electronics and its rival, LG Electronics are expected to launch foldable smartphones in the third and fourth quarter of 2017.

South Korea’s largest English newspaper, The Korea Herald said the plan was confirmed by sources familiar with the matter.

“Samsung is expected to roll out more than 100,000 units of fold-out devices in the third quarter,” the paper quoted a source as saying.

It said Samsung had initially completed the development of fold-in phones that tuck the screen inside when folded, adding that it began the development of fold-out technologies around August, deeming that users may find it inconvenient to unfold the phones every time they want to use them.

“Since the company already secured fold-in phone technology, it was not a big challenge to shift into the fold-out phones,” the source said.

A final decision has yet to be taken by Samsung about when the devices would be made public, according to the report.
Sources told the newspaper on the condition of anonymity that LG has plans to produce over 100,000 foldable devices in the fourth quarter.

The report said a source disclosed that LG started the development of fold-out technology two to three years ago, and had more advanced technology than Samsung.

Some reports indicate that Apple had also registered a patent for foldable devices.
