Cristiano Ronaldo has become La Liga’s all-time leading penalty scorer after netting from the spot for the 57th time in Real Madrid’s rousing comeback at Villarreal.
Ronaldo previously shared the honour with Madrid legend Hugo Sanchez on 56 after his goal from the spot in his side’s 2-1 defeat to Sevilla back in January.
But following the referee’s decision to controversially award a penalty after Toni Kroos’ shot rebounded off Bruno Soriano’s arm, the 32-year-old now stands atop the penalty charts in Spain’s top flight.
Ronaldo’s successful spot-kick brought the match back to 2-2 after Madrid had earlier fallen two goals behind.
Manu Trigueros volleyed home Samu Castillejo’s knockdown to put the Yellow Submarines ahead before Cedric Bakambu burst onto Bruno’s through ball to slot past Keylor Navas after a frenetic opening to the second-half.
However, Bale started Madrid’s fightback as he rose highest to power home Dani Carvajal’s cross with 25 minutes left.
The visitors were then handed a mighty boost from the referee 15 minutes from time, allowing Ronaldo to smash home the equaliser before substitute Alvaro Morata’s powered another header past Andres Fernandez to complete the comeback.
Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi, whose late winner at Atletico Madrid winner took the Catalans top, lags some way behind Ronaldo in fifth with 43.
Real lead Barca by a point, but also have a game in hand on their title rivals in a thrilling La Liga race.
