A fake lawyer, Alpha George, who was arrested in Port Harcourt for impersonating a lawyer has been jailed for three years.
Justice George Omeriji of the Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt said the three years sentence begins to count from when the convict was first arrested.
In his ruling, Justice Omeriji also directed that the legal practitioners’ attire recovered from Alpha George be placed in the archive of the Rivers State Ministry of Justice.
Before he was taken away, the convict told newsmen that he regrets his action of posing as a lawyer.
Reacting to the ruling outside the courtroom, the State Prosecution Counsel, Chidi Eke told newsmen that the judgment would serve as a deterrent to other fake lawyers.
“The Nigerian Bar Association had been doing a lot to stop quackery and impersonation in the legal profession.
“It is funny how people still decide to impersonate a lawyer. The NBA has created a seal which is branded for every member of the association. On every process you file in court, your seal must be stamped on it. If not, your process will be thrown out. With all these and many more, we still record incidents of impersonation.
“The law has taken its course on this one. The convict has learnt his lessons and we believe this serves as a deterrent to others out there who are still parading themselves as lawyers,” Eke said.
The convicted fake lawyer, Alpha George was apprehended and he appeared before Justice Adolphus Enebeli of the High Court in Port Harcourt in 2015.
