Kano State: Censorship Court Sends Singer to Prison After Release of His Latest Song

A censorship court in Kano State, north-west Nigeria, has remanded the embattled singer, Sadiq Zazzabi, over the release of his latest song.

Zazzabi was last week hauled before the court on the grounds that he’d violated the state’s censorship board law which requires that songs or movies should pass a censorship screening before it is released.

But Zazzabi, who released his song before the approval of the censorship board, said he was being hounded because of his support for former Gov. Rabiu Kwankwaso, allegations the government has flatly denied.

It’s common knowledge that Mr. Kwankwaso, now a senator, has been at loggerheads with incumbent Governor Abdullahi Ganduje since 2015, with their supporters getting involved in violent clashes on a number of occasions.

After his summon to appear before the Kano state censors board on Wednesday, the board Chairman, Ismaila Afakallahu, confirmed to PT that the singer will remain in prison till Friday.

“The sitting took place today and Sadiq was asked to be remanded in prison until Friday when the court will resume hearing on the case,” he said, before adding that the matter was not about politics.

“Yes he actually brought the song for censorship and before we can grant him a certificate of approval, he went ahead to launch the song. For doing that he has faulted the censors’ board rule and we are charging him for that.

“Censoring a movie or song can take up to three weeks or more depending on the complexity of the song or film,” he stated.

Zazzabi’s case isn’t peculiar to him, as Kano State has been known to take a draconian stand on artistes.

Top Kannywood actress Rahama Sadau was banned for ‘hugging’ in a music video last year, months after actor Adam Zango was forced to swear on live TV that he wasn’t gay.
