One person has been reportedly killed as two rival cult groups engaged in supremacy clash on Sunday at Ekiugbo community and Ughelli town in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State.
The incident which occurred at about 10.00pm on Sunday saw another member with severe injuries on his body; he only escaped being killed by members of the rival cult group.
Our correspondent learnt the renewed rivalry was between Baggars and Malphite confraternities, the most dominant groups in the area. The clash created fresh tension among residents.
A source said the victim was trailed by his assailants to a popular drinking bar near Onosode junction along the Ekiugbo Market road where he was stabbed to death.
The young man who was said to be in his late twenties could not be identified by sympathisers, who rushed him to a nearby hospital where he gave up the ghost. The deceased was stabbed in various parts of his body by the hoodlums.
Although, it was not clear who attacked first, a similar incident happened simultaneously when another member of another cult group was attacked at the Post Office roundabout in Ughelli, but the victim narrowly escaped being killed by his assailants.
According to the source, “He was stabbed multiple times after he was trailed from the bar to the roundabout close to Onosode junction along the Ughelli-Warri road by his assailants at about 10pm”
A senior police officer attached to the Ughelli Police Area Command confirmed the incident but added that nobody had been arrested.
The officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, added that the remains of the suspect had been deposited at the Ughelli Central Hospital mortuary for further investigation.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Andrew Aniamaka, said he was busy and promised to call back but had not done so at the time of filing this report.
