MTN Nigeria made a big statement of intent to reclaim the Nigeria Telecommunications Game (NTG) football title which has eluded them in the last two editions with an emphatic 3-0 win over arch rivals and cup holders, Etisalat on Match Day 2 of the 2015 Telecom Games.
It was also a match day of big upset as new comers, IHS surprised Airtel 3-1 to douse their ambitions that were well fired after an opening day 1-1 draw with Etisalat.
Kunle Kunyinu, Alichie Iheukwumere and Abdultabar Adeleke were the scorers for MTN in the match which saw Etisalat not making capital of their first half domination. Such squandered opportunities they were left to rue at the end as the Yhello Boys made good the chances they created in the other half of the game to claim a sixth victory from the nine meetings between the two sides.
"It has been match of two halves in which we completely dominated the first half", lamented captain Andrew Enebeli one of the trio of Etisalat players guilty of the missed gilt edged chances. The others were Osere Osunbor and Yakub Kazim.
Ibrahim Anifowoshe scored a brace as debutants IHS, stunned Airtel with additional goal from Kalu Moses while Sunday Jackson nicked a consolatory effort for the Reds of Banana Island.
Coming in as underdogs, IHS rode on the wave of a massive fan base made up of their staff led by their CEO, Mr. Rajiv Jaitly. It was no surprise that they played with all their heart to win the highly entertaining match.
Airtel scored first in the first half, but IHS soon equalized. The second half was an all IHS affair as they went on to score two more goals but had the man of the Match, Ibrahim Anifowoshe to thank for his fine display which he capped with a brace.
Airtel were however guilty of missing a few chances in the second half, the culprit been the hero of their first match, Kenneth Kanu.
