After 13 years, people have still got the Black Eyed Peas questioning, “Where is the love?”
After a tumultuous year following events like the mass shooting in Orlando, the attacks in Paris, and the deaths of multiple black people at the hands of white police officers, BEP has reunited to remake their 2003 hit “Where Is The Love?." Justin Timberlake and Fergie are back for vocal duties, and the updated, more somber arrangement also includes spoken wisdom from DJ Khaled, gorgeous vocal runs via Mary J. Blige, and a joint verse from A$AP Rocky and Jaden Smith. Diddy, Usher, Jamie Foxx, The Game, Tori Kelly, Jessie J, Ty Dolla $ign, Nicole Scherzinger, and Andra Day also lend their voices.
An accompanying black-and-white video for the song includes appearances from family members affected by gun violence (like Alton Sterling’s aunt and Philando Castile’s mother) and a slew of celebrities, including Kendall Jenner, Vanessa Hudgens, Snoop Dogg, Lance Bass, Rosario Dawson, Shailene Woodley, and LL Cool J.
In a video for ATTN, BEP’s will.i.am explained why they decided to remake their hit, saying, “I remember when the attack in Paris happened. People would say ‘We need ‘Where Is the Love?’ again.’ And then Belgium happened, and then Turkey, and then Orlando, and then Philando, and Alton before him, and then Dallas. Everyone was calling on us, like, ‘We need that song.’”
