THE Army said it has arrested two soldiers intent on a smear campaign against the Chief of Army Staff, Major-General Tukur Buratai. Army spokesman, Colonel Sani Usman said in a statement yesterday night that the army is also a prime target of what he called “disinformation campaign” by the officers.
According to Usman, “The Nigerian Army has received report of some elements, both within the Nigerian Army and outside, especially through the use of social media to ridicule the Nigerian Army and the person of the Chief of Army Staff for reasons best known to them.
“They intend to execute this plan as from next month, using all means possible; lies, fabricating base- less stories, falsehood, publishing and broadcasting them through some designated print and electronic media, most especially social media.
“The army has identified some of the officers involved and their collaborators; the officers are being investigated to unravel their motives and motivation,” Usman disclosed.
Pointing out that any grave and undue distraction may be an indirect ploy to sabotage the fight against Boko Haram, he appealed to the Nigerian mass media “to sustain its supportive disposition” and urged all Nigerians to beware of the game-plan.
