How To Rinse Your Hair With Beer To Treat Heat Damaged Hair

Beer for hair?! I know what you are thinking. Odd choice, especially for use on hair, right? If you are a curly haired girl suffering from heat damage, you might be considering it on second thoughts, because, let’s face it, nothing is too outrageous to revive your beautiful curls after suffering the dreaded heat damage.

Heat damage is a problem that occurs after using excessive heat or chemicals to blow dry, heat style or straighten hair; with or without the use of heat protectants. Yep! Heat damage can still happen even after using silicones and heat protectants before styling. Sorry!

Now that I have established the fact that one cannot completely avoid heat damage especially when heat styling is part of your hair routine, how then can you spot it? It’s really easy. You will know instantly if you have this problem after you wash out hair and allow it to return to natural state. If you notice some straight ends or curls that are not as elastic as they should be, then you most likely have heat damaged hair. Some heat damage is reversible, hence the beer rinse. Unfortunately, some types of heat damage aren’t, and so you may actually have to clip damaged ends if you want healthier hair. Not cutting off damaged areas will lead to split ends which will further damage your hair.

When done correctly and consistently, the beer rinse can

-Revitalize curls by adding definition and body.

    -Improve length retention.

-Restore moisture and shine for curly girls.

What you’ll need for the Beer Rinse

-1 can of Non-Alcoholic or Alcoholic Beer (whichever is available)

    -Spray bottle-for better application (optional)

    -Deep Conditioner

    -Heating/ Shower Cap

    Directions:

    1. Open up a can/ bottle of beer and let it sit out for a few hours or over night. This is to ensure that the beer goes flat.

    2. On freshly washed hair, pour or spray beer into hair from root to tip, making sure that all strands are coated perfectly. P.S. Ignore the smell of the strong smell of the beer, it will wash out.

    3. After coating hair with beer, allow it to sit for 2-5 minutes for proper strand penetration.

    4. When sitting time is up, rinse beer off hair with warm water, then cold water to seal in moisture.

    5. Proceed to deep condition as usual.

    Please note that

    1. The beer rinse method should be done once or twice every month for best results.

    2. Make sure that beer is flat (no bubbles) before application.

    3. Follow up the beer rinse step with deep conditioning for really damaged hair.

    4. Your results may vary depending on hair type.

Have you tried the beer rinse? Please share your experiences.
