The men were accused of shooting their neighbours' dogs with slingshots before poisoning them.
According to the Guiyang Evening News, a man called Mr Xiao said he caught the two men shooing his dogs in his backyard at 6am.
He shouted to two of his neighbours who chased the alleged thieves - who then fell into a trench while trying to flee on a motorbike.
They were caught by angry villagers who beat them up, tied them to an electricity pole and hung the dead dogs around their necks.

Several police officers were called to the scene to calm the situation but were forced to call for back up when they angry mob got out of hand.
The incident happened in southwest China's Guizhou Province, where more than 100 government police officers were eventually dispatched to handle the situation.
By the time the accused men were freed, they had been held by villagers for 10 hours.
The alleged dog thieves have been detained by police who are investigating their reported beating.
