OAU Students Condemn Union’s Ban As School Resumes Jan. 10

Last year December, the management of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, abruptly ordered students out of the campus over their persistent protest against poor welfare conditions, the institution has fixed the resumption of academic activities for Monday, January 10.

This is even as the leadership of the students’ union on the campus have kicked against what it termed the ‘wrongful suspension’ of its activities, while insisting that in the eyes of the students, the union remains alive and will continue to fight for better welfare of its members on campus.

Following the students’ two-day-protest, which held on Monday, November 30 and Tuesday, December 1, 2015, the management through the office of the registrar, in a circular, had ordered the students to vacate campus. And on Wednesday, December 3, another special release with Ref no: RO.2/Vol. VI/180 announced the suspension of the students’ union activities.

The university’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Abiodun Olarewaju, said the closure was a midterm break and that the decision was taken by the institution’s Senate.

Meanwhile, the Senate, after its meeting Monday, announced that the students should return to the campus on Monday, January 10, and that towards completing the aborted second semester, academic activities would resume immediately.
