Trump nomination letter was submitted by an unidentified US nominator who said the republican candidate should receive the Prize for “his vigorous peace through strength ideology, used as a threat weapon of deterrence against radical Islam, ISIS, nuclear Iran and Communist China,” the Independent quotes a Nobel watcher told French media.
Last December, Trump stirred a global outrage when he called for banning Muslims from entering the United States, until the government can “figure out what is going on”.
The Presidential candidate hate speech against Muslims came few days following the San Bernardino attacks in which Syed Rizwan Farook, an American citizen, and his Pakistan-born wife fatally shot 14 people.
Trump sought to capitalize on the uproar caused by the attack and associated Islam and Muslims with extremism and terrorism.
“Without looking at the various polling data, it is obvious to anybody the hatred is beyond comprehension. Where this hatred comes from and why we will have to determine,” Trump said at the time.
“Until we are able to determine and understand this problem and the dangerous threat it poses, our country cannot be victims of horrendous attacks by people that believe only in jihad, and have not sense of reason or respect for human life,” he added.
Richard Goodstein, Washington D.C. Lawyer and Advisor to the Hillary Clinton 2008 campaign, told Morocco World News that this nomination aims rather to put Trump on the spotlight and highlight the threat he poses to international peace and security with his anti-Islam and anti-Latino rhetoric.
“Whoever nominated Trump was clearly being sarcastic, as a way to put the spotlight on the hateful utterances of the person in the world who has probably done more to stand in the way of peace than any person alive. The Nobel committee is obviously not taking this ‘nomination’ seriously,” he said.
Kristian Berg Harpviken, a Nobel watcher and head of the Peace Research Institute in Oslo was quoted by Reuters as saying that Trump has no chance to win the Nobel Peace Prize.
