Arsenal youngster Alex Iwobi became the first overseas-based player to hit the Super Eagles camp in Abuja when he arrived at the Federal Capital City Sunday evening. His arrival was announced by the Nigeria Football Federation via a tweet and the Eagles Media Officer Toyin Ibitoye confirmed the development.
He said, “Others are still being expected tonight but for now he (Iwobi) is the only one on ground.”
Two players were being expected from Turkey Sunday night according to the NFF.
Iwobi has been steady in form this season with the attacker scoring a goal for Arsenal as the London team defeated Everton 2-0 at the Merseyside in an English Premier League match played on Saturday.
Mikel Obi was billed to leave London Sunday night aboard a British Airways flight to join his colleagues Monday morning in Abuja. The Chelsea star making his first appearance in the 2017 African Cup of Nations qualifying series after missing the first two rounds against Chad and Tanzania, which the Eagles played in Dar es Salaam.
And by the weekend Samson Siasia trimmed down the number of home-based players in camp by selecting just six from the pool for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Egypt.
According to the Super Eagles official Twitter handle, the six players picked are Ikechukwu Ezenwa, Kalu Orji and Chibuzor Okonkwo, Matthew Etim and Ifeanyi Matthew. The U-23 Africa Cup of Nations highest goal scorer Oghenekaro Etebo also made the cut. But Austin Oboroakpo and Chisom Chikatara of the African Nations Championship fame were dropped.
Femi Thomas and Chima Akas of Enyimba were released to their club for the CAF Champions League match they played in Burundi on Saturday.
The six selected will be joined by the overseas-based players. The entire squad will travel to Kaduna on Tuesday.
The Eagles will entertain Egypt on Friday at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium and face them again in Alexandria four days later.
Egypt top Group G with six points from two games, two points ahead of the Eagles who are second on four points and the same number of games.
