Lula Gillespie-Miller, now 69, was discovered living under an alias after police who were called to investigate "a woman with similarities" to her uncovered her identity.
The discovery brings to an end a decades old mystery that started in 1974 when Gillespie-Miller, then aged 28, left her young family behind to start a new life shortly after her third child was born.
According to officials at Indiana State Police department Gillespie-Miller told them she had run away as she "felt she was too young to be a mother at the time".
Officers established Gillespie-Miller had been living in Texas since the 1990's under an assumed name and after talking to the former missing person have gained consent to pass her new details on to her daughter Tammy in the hopes they may be reunited.
