705,352 Nigerians Apply For 10,000 Police Jobs – PSC

Barely a month after the Police Service Commission (PSC) announced the commencement of recruitment of 10,000 police personnel, a total of 705,352 applicants have submitted their applications.

The number of applications so far received by the PSC, as at yesterday, was 695, 352, higher than the 10, 000, which President Muhammadu Buhari had given approval for recruitment into the Nigeria Police Force, which has not carried out any recruitment exercise in the last few years.

The PSC, which made the disclosure yesterday in a statement by its Head of Press and Public Relations, Mr. Ikechukwu Ani, noted that 202,427 applicants have successfully applied for the position of Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), 169,446 for the position of Cadet Inspector, while a total of 333,479, have applied for the position of Constable.

This is in spite of the fact that the Commission will be recruiting 500 Cadet ASPs, 500 Cadet Inspectors, 1,500 Specialist Officers, and 7,500 Constables.

“The Police Service Commission has, at 7:30a.m., Tuesday, April 19th, received 705,352 applications from applicants who are seeking employment into the recently advertised 10,000 vacancies into the Nigeria Police Force.

“A breakdown of the applications showed that 202,427 applicants have successfully applied for the position of Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), 169,446, for the position of Cadet Inspector and 333,479 for the position of Constables.

“The commission will be recruiting 500 Cadet ASPs, 500 Cadet Inspectors, 1,500 Specialist Officers and 7,500 Constables to meet the president’s approved 10,000 new entrants into the Force,” the statement said. The Chairman of the PSC, Sir Mike Mbama Okiro, noted that “the process of receiving the forms has been smooth and transparent.”

While giving assurance of the commission’s commitment to “making the recruitment exercise a huge exercise”, the retired Inspector-General of Police (IGP), “assured the applicants of fairness and equal opportunity”.

In the meantime, the commission has disclosed that its Public Complaints Committee has received 94 complaints since November 2015, when it began sitting.

A Commissioner at the PSC, Justice Olufunlola Adekeye, was quoted as making the disclosure at a Capacity Building Workshop for the Commission’s Public Complaints Committee on Police Conduct.

Twenty-three of the complaints are already being treated, according to the PSC.
