A female traffic warden was beaten to a pulp by the divisional police officer (DPO) in charge of Ikenne police division in Ogun State for allegedly daring to stop his private car for violating traffic law.
The DPO, Patrick Onwu, who was off duty and dressed in civilian clothes reportedly drove into a filling station, changed into his uniform, and then attacked the traffic policewoman, Anifat Bello, an inspector.
Onwu, who was coming to Abeokuta from Sagamu, reportedly beat her to stupor.
The traffic warden, Anifat Bello, has won several recognitions and awards for discharging her duty. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, had during a familarization visit of the state Police Commissioner, Abdulmajid Ali last year recommended the traffic officer for a national honour.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the incident and said the Commissioner of Police, was saddened by the development and has directed that the matter be investigated.
“The woman traffic officer has reported the matter to the CP and he has directed that the matter be thoroughly investigated. The CP was not happy when the woman came with a swollen face. If the allegation is true, I am very sure the CP will know what to do,” he said.
