Despite the Red Devils' victory in the FA Cup final on Saturday it is understood that the Special One will succeed Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford in the coming days.
It was a day which rescued United's season at Wembley, marking their first piece of major silverware since Sir Alex Ferguson left the club.
However, their failure to qualify for the Champions League looks to have cost the Dutchman his job, missing out on goal difference to local rivals Manchester City in the race for fourth place.
Van Gaal appeared to confirm his departure on Sunday morning.
When asked outside United's team hotel in London about his future, he simply said: "No, no, no, it's over."
Van Gaal's two-year tenure as United manager has been an increasingly rocky one over the last six months, with fans and pundits alike criticising the team's style of play under his stewardship.
