Woman Escapes Mob Attack In Market Over Fake N500 Notes

A middle-aged woman was mobbed after she was caught trying to buy items with currency believed to be fake at Abaji market last Friday.

A witness said the incident happened at about 4:47p.m .after the woman was seen with N500 notes, totaling N60,000, trying to buy plates. The trader was said to have suspected the money to be fake.

The witness said the woman denied that the N500 was fake, but the trader refused to collect it and the argument between them drew the attention of passersby.

"The woman bought a plate of N200 from the trader and gave him N500. I was also buying a cup in the shop and before I knew what was happening people have gathered at the shop. The crowd examined the N500 note and said it was fake. They now searched the woman’s purse and discovered N60,000 all in N500 denominations, which were also suspected to be fake,” she said.

She said after the discovery, the woman tried to escape but the crowd caught her and beat her up. She, however, said that the woman was able to escape before she was lynched.

When contacted, the Abaji Divisional Police Officer (DPO) CSP David Kolo, said he was not aware of the incident, as nobody came to report such incident at the police station.

"In fact, I am just hearing about this incident from you, as nobody came to report the matter, but I will send my men to the market to find out, "he said.
