A suspected Niger Delta Avengers strike force leader, Abraham Suru who was recently declared wanted by the military has been arrested by the Nigerian Navy.
The military declared Suru wanted for allegedly leading the incessant attacks on oil and gas facilities within Warri North and South-West Council areas of Delta state.
Suru who is otherwise known as Gabon and allegedly a serial pipeline vandal, was arrested by the Navy around Sapele council area in Delta state, reports the Punch.
The Navy paraded the Avengers strike force leader on Thursday at the Warri Navy Base where the Commander, Nigerian Navy Ship Delta, Commodore Joseph Dzunve said the suspect was arrested on Tuesday 20 September, 2016 in Sapele where he had been hiding.
Dzunve noted that Suru’s arrest was part of intense efforts by the Navy through the Operation Delta Safe to flush out militants and other criminal elements from the region.
“He (Abraham Suru aka Gabon) is involved in pipeline vandalism, sea robbery, attacks shipping, illegal bunkering and currently a suspected member of the Niger Delta Avengers,”Dzunve said.
The Navy chief further told journalists that Suru was the ring leader of one of the cell groups within the Niger Delta Avengers, whose team members include a certain General Felix that had earlier been arrested by his operatives.
The alleged Avengers strike force leader similarly confessed to newsmen that he was a militant and and that he had spearheaded the bombing of oil facilities in the Niger Delta including one at Dibi community in Warri North.
Suru however denied being a member of the Niger Delta Avengers, admitting only that he was recruited into militancy in 2011 by one General Kaphapolo, a former militant leader who died recently in a ghastly motor accident.
He added that he was thereafter invited to a team led by one General Tony Felix based on his expertise at blowing up oil facilities.
