Oshiomhole Suspends Monarch for 1 Year Over Assault

Following the alleged refusal of the traditional ruler of Uromi land, Onojie Zaiki Edonojie II to apologise within the time stipulated by the Edo state government and in the manner prescribed for assaulting a lady, the state government has further suspended him from office for 1 year.

The Edo state government had recently ordered the traditional ruler to publicly apologise to his victim, Ms Betty Okoebor within 7 days during which he was also asked to desist from functioning in his office.

The Onojie however appeared to have refused to apologise to Ms Okoebor but rather organised an event in his palace where the victim of his assault rather apologised to him.

He thereafter wrote a letter to the state government indicating that his victim had followed the custom and ‘reconciled herself to the throne as a daughter.’

Irked by the action of the traditional ruler, Governor Adams Oshiomhole, on Friday, approved further sanctions against the Uromi monarch.

The Nation reports that the 1-year suspension is to take effect from Monday, 7th November according to a letter signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof Julius Ihonvbere.

The letter read in part: “Your public assault and disgrace of a citizen of the Federal Republic, in your estimation, was a non-issue.

“To ridicule the Edo State Government and deride the directive that you apologise to Ms. Okoebor, you proceeded to organise a ‘forgiveness Session’ in your Palace in your capacity as Ojuromi, wearing a crown even when you were still suspended from office, purporting to be ‘forgiving’ Ms. Okoebor.

”At the said ‘forgiveness session’, you compelled the victim of your assault to apologise to you for the assault against her person while on her knees and made to remain in same position while being interviewed by journalists.

“You had the embarrassing session videoed and aired repeatedly on television subjecting Ms. Okoebor to double jeopardy and double disgrace by expanding the frontiers of her embarrassment to a global level through the electronic and social media.”

The Onojie has now also been accused of other actions that may amount to criminal conduct, according to the state government.

The allegations include alleged acts of illegally taking over the cattle market in Uromi and assigning the responsibility for collecting revenue for the Local Government Council to unauthorized persons.

“By virtue of this suspension from office, your remuneration from the 5 percent monthly FAC allocation to the Local Government shall be appropriated and donated to orphanages during this period,” the letter concluded.
