John Obi Mikel has opened his Tianjin TEDA account as they succumbed to a 6-2 drubbing from German side St. Pauli FC over the weekend.
Super Eagles captain Mikel had joined the Chinese Super League club along with other arrivals during the January transfer window to strengthen Jaime Pacheco’s squad after a poor outing last season, but results haven’t been going their way so far.
The 29-year-old former Chelsea midfielder made his bow for his new club in a 2-1 defeat to Borussia Mönchengladbach in their pre-season outing last week at the Tianjin Olympic Center Stadium.
And they continued their losing streak against the German second division outfit, though the Nigerian gave a glimpse of his stellar quality when he headed in a free kick to reduce the deficit for his team who were already three goals down, Goal writes.
Despite the string of defeats, Mikel is largely expected to enjoy a fine season in the Chinese Super League, having impressed for Chelsea last term before the arrival of manager Antonio Conte in the summer.
TEDA continue their winter training in Tianjin as they step up preparation for the new season in the hope of improving on their 11th place finish past term.
