This, the government explained would be in the short and long term, as the World celebrates Language Day.
The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu made this known in Abuja on the celebration of the 2017 International Mother Language Day.
The Minister also said that it was through collective effort and commitment that the desired impact in promoting Nigerian Indigenous languages could be achieved.
According to him, “the government is committed to preserving indigenous languages despite challenges facing the teaching and learning of these languages.”
He said that the languages were declining among young Nigerians both in speaking and writing.
Repositioning languages
Adamu noted that Year 2017 Commemoration of International Mother Tongue Day with the theme: ‘Towards Sustainable Futures Through Multilingual Education’ aptly describes the strategies employed by the Nigerian government and stakeholders towards repositioning the teaching and learning of indigenous and foreign languages.
“The Ministry in line with the vision of the present administration of expanding and providing quality education at all levels is committed to the promotion and preservation of our indigenous languages.”
This year’s celebration was organised in collaboration with the Linguistic Association of Nigeria, LAN, National institute for Cultural Orientation, NICO.
UNESCO International Mother Language Day is a day celebrated throughout the world every February 21, by UNESCO member countries to emphasise the importance of linguistic and cultural diversities among the various ethnic communities of these countries.
